Our story
Star Grass Farm is a small scale vegetable farm that began as a urban based operation producing on just under an acre in Des Moines. Eventually, we moved to a larger farm on rented ground near Cambridge, IA. In the summer of 2016 we moved to the farm's final home in Maxwell, IA. We enjoy working to weave our small farm into the fabric of Iowa's vast agricultural landscape. We do this as a small scale, diversified, ecologically and financially sustainable fruit and vegetable farm in the heart of Iowa. Along with regeneratively growing fruits and veggies, we also raise our poultry on grass pasture. Rotated pastures are best for the health of the soil and the health of the animals. Caring for both produces some of the best eggs around! Find us at the Downtown Ames Farmers Market and online at stargrassfarm.square.site
Our practices and ingredients
Rotational, multispecies grazing practices used to build healthy soils and healthy animals. Our chickens are introduced to pastures early on in their lives. These birds thrive on the fresh grass provided by rotated pastures using mobile chicken coops and protective fencing to ensure comfort and safety. Usually, birds won't return the the same spot for two years. The connection that livestock make with the land is just as beneficial to them as it is to us. Our hens root, scratch and peck through their days, pulling us into that connection to the land. Along with their foraging for greens and bugs, we supplement their diet with a NON-GMO feed produced in Wisconsin. We don't use just any feed and never use any mass produced crumbles or pellets. Our feed is milled from whole seeds and other fine ingredients to produce an outstanding feed ration specifically tailored to ensuring healthy pastured birds that lay beautiful eggs with golden orange yolks.
